AUDIOLOGY Q: Can I get away with just one hearing aid? A: The most important factor in whether a person needs one or two hearing aids is the result of the hearing test. If a person has hearing loss in both ears, it is very important to treat both ears. Having balanced hearing on both sides helps us know what direction sound is coming from and helps us hear better when there is background noise. The only time I prescribe one hearing aid is when there is a hearing loss in one ear and normal hearing in the other ear. Otherwise, two hearing aids give the best outcome. I often counsel patients who ask this question due to cost to choose two inexpensive hearing aids rather than one expensive hearing aid. Our brain needs balanced input for optimal hearing, so in most cases the two less expensive hearing aids do better than one.
