CARPET CLEANING Q: Ijust spilled strawberry pop on my carpet. What should I do? A: Red Dye Removal The first thing to do when an accident occurs with red dye such as Kool Aid, Hawaiian Punch or similar is to first dilute the area with COLD Kirk Saiger water and blot up with clean towels. The cold water will slow the dyes from migrating into other areas and as long as you can keep on getting red dye up out of the carpet, keep putting cold water and blotting the stain. After very little red dye comes up from the fibers, apply straight 3% hydrogen peroxide to the area. To accelerate the reactivity of the hydrogen peroxide, cover the area with a plastic bag. The plastic bag will keep the oxidizing vapors concentrated on the stain Keep the stain covered for at least 12 hours. A second application of hydrogen peroxide maybe necessary after 48 hours if any remaining dye is evident. This process takes time and don't be discouraged if you don't see immediate results. The biggest key is NOT to use over the counter spotters such as spot shot or resolve. These spotters contain surfactants that can push the stain further into the fiber causing damage, distortion, and permanent color change. Cold water, patience and time is best for this type of stain.
