REHAB SERVICES Q: I have been having some pain with running and I just can't seem to build up my speed or mileage. How can I improve this? Briana Isakson, DPT A: If you are having pain that is worsening or not getting better, it may be time to work on your training. Do not rest completely. In the case of most acute or chronic problems, fully resting will not allow the body part to adapt and build strength for running. Find another activity that reduces impact and add in strength training. This typically looks like lunges, squats, deadlifts, and can be simply with your body weight or adding resistance. Strength training helps you become a more efficient runner and keeps your muscles and tendons healthy and "springy". Other modalities such as massage, ice, and stretching can be helpful in the short-term, but really do not help your body make adjustments to give you long-term success. Did you know that Sanford Bemidji offers a 2D Running Analysis using high speed cameras and specialty software? This allows our Running Academy Experts to identify your unique limitations and inefficiencies that are reducing your ability to have optimal performance. This can be done as part of a physical therapy evaluation and often covered by insurance. There are two ways to go about getting an evaluation scheduled: If part of an injury, ask your doctor or physical therapist about Sanford's Running Academy. Or you can call us to schedule a consultation at 218-333-6774.
