A: Doug Jones Owner Most likely the spotter that you are using is leaving a "sticky" residue on the carpet where it is being applied. If so, then all dirt and soil will stick to these areas. It doesn't take much leftover residue to attract soil. The spots will also come back if the carpet was over-wetted, which can cause wicking to occur This is what happens when soil remains in the lower part of the carpet fiber or the backing. The top of the carpet fibers dry first and actually pull moisture up from the bottom of the fiber which can give any hidden soil a piggyback ride up to the surface.
