Eugene's struggles with the pressure of growing up during the Great Depression and impending Second World War are paralleled by struggles with family and relationships. The young man's witty observations about his quirky, Polish-Jewish family underscore the importance of family, even in the most challenging of times. From dreams of baseball to girls, Eugene's attempts to cope with his family's mundane existence are a recipe for hilarity.
