EYE CARE Q:What is Presbyopia? A: Presbyopia is a normal aging process where the eyes gradually lose their ability to focus. Accommodation (focusing) is how our Dr. Kynndyl eyes achieve clear vision at different distances. Giannonatti We accommodate the most when viewing near objects. Therefore, presbyopia most commonly causes blurry near vision. Many people first notice presbyopia in their mid 40's and continues to progress into our mid 60's until all focusing ability is lost. First signs include needing to hold reading material farther away for it to be clear. Other signs/ symptoms may include eyestrain or headaches. Presbyopia can be corrected with prescription glasses in the form of bifocal, progressive, or single vision lenses. Non-prescription glasses often called "cheaters" can be used when distance glasses aren't needed. Multifocal contact lenses are also available to correct presbyopia. In some cases, people who are myopic (nearsighted) can take off their distance glasses for clear near vision. If you have any questions regarding correction of presbyopia contact our office.
