According to the U.S. Census Bureau, in the year 2000 there were 36.3 million Americans 65 or older. By the year 2050 that number is expected to reach 86.7 million. The National ance for Caregiving tells us that in 2004, more than S3 Chuck Jenser million family members acted as caregivers that number is expected to reach 81 million by 2050. Caregivers are ofen in General Services their 50's, 60's, and even 70's and have to care for themselves as well as children, grandchildren, and aging family members. The time to think about those next steps" is now before there is a crisis situation. Start small, taking small steps and making small decisions. Be prepared. Look for signs of health problems and deteriorating capabilities. Communication is essential. The Mayo Clinic offers the following which may indicate if your elder needs extra care A change in outward appearances - a decdine in their grooming or housekeeping. Memory loss beyond normal forgetfulness. Home safety falling. Manager Driving safety - a rise in accidents or confusion. Weight loss. Mood changes or depression. Declining social interactions Impaired mobility difficulty walking or moving around Address safety first - can you add safety bars in the bath, a ramp for wheelchairs? Can you run their errands? Is there home care services, senior transportation or adult day services that you can bring in or have the elder attend? Encourage a doctor's visit and offer to go with them so you can hear any recommendations. To be continued..
