AUDIOLOGY Q: Are there different kinds of hearing loss? A: Yes, there are three different types of hearing loss. Sensorineural, Conductive, and Mixed hearing loss. Sensorineural Andrea Wilson hearing loss, the most common, is a permanent type of hearing loss that is caused by damage directly to the hearing organ itself. This can be caused by many factors: aging, noise exposure, genetics, and more. Conductive hearing loss is when the hearing organ is healthy, however, the pathway the sound travels to get to the hearing organ is disrupted. This can be caused by earwax, ear infections, and other middle ear diseases This type of hearing loss may be temporary. The third type of hearing loss is Mixed hearing loss. This type of hearing loss is a combination of both Sensorineural and Conductive hearing loss. With Mixed hearing loss, there is both damage to the hearing organ and a disruption in the middle and/or outer ear space. The type of hearing loss you may experience can be determined by seeing a hearing professional for a full diagnostic evaluation.
