AUDIOLOGY Q: I recently had a head cold and feel like my hearing has decreased. What should I do? A: If you are just getting over an upper Andrea Wilson respiratory infection, it is common to feel Au.D. as if your ears are stuffy or sounds are muffled. This can be caused by fluid behind the eardrum or an excess of negative pressure pushing on the eardrum. This sensation is similar to what happens to your ears when travelling in an airplane or any change in elevation. Your eustachian tube, the tube that goes from your middle ear to your nasopharynx, is not properly equalizing pressure. This sensation should go away shortly after recovering from your illness. However, if this persists, it is important to follow-up with your primary care physician.
