REHAB SERVICES Q: My mother is now living with us and she has trouble getting out of her recliner chair. I would like to purchase a recliner lift chair for her, but have reservations that this would cause her to lose even more strength. What would you recommend? Corinna Prestegard, MPT A:I think a comfortable recliner lift chair is a wonderful idea. The hope is that she continues to be mobile while living in your home, and as independent as possible. It would be beneficial for her to have a light exercise program in place to gain strength in the lower extremities and a regular walking program with the assistive device that is appropriate for her. This way she can gain strength and endurance to make these transfers easier and ultimately safe. The benefit of this recliner lift chair is that she would not feel "stuck" when she is having a low energy day or if she is more tired in the evenings. She can use the controls to elevate the chair and be independent at these times, and would not need to use the lift portion during times of more energy. These chairs can be found at your local furniture store for a reasonable price. Enjoy this time with your mom!
